The Past

from Blanco by Antwan Valentino

about

The Past is a song I wrote about my cousin, who also used to be my best friend. I'm kind of just reminiscing about our childhood together, and growing up experiencing life.

Honestly, there's so many inside stories that I reference, that I don't really expect people to follow this one. My cousin and I haven't spoke in years, but I hope one day that he hears this song and it makes him smile.

[Verse 1]
See I remember being friends back when life was beautiful
When we were little potty mouths, screaming “kiss my booty hole”
Had to fantasize, we ain't seen a girly nude before
We were more concerned with stacking decks and playing Yu-Gi-Oh
The youngest with two sisters, you were the middle one of three boys
I used to love to come over so I could play with these toys
Teck Decks, air hockey, guns that we can deploy
Often I was jealous till I realized that y'all destroyed
Everything your folks gave you, what they had worked hard for
Running 'round jumping on their cars like it was parkour
You'd turn your toys to weapons, having battles, it was hardcore
You better thank god your parents ain't get you no dart board
Remember you would fight with Greg, he's small but you got beat again
When you'd get mad you'd pick on Bubba, that was cheap, an easy win
Now I reminisce about shenanigans that we'd be in
Damn I miss your stupid jokes when you would crack a cheesy grin

[Verse 2]
Remember when we fought them two dudes in front of Downtown Brew
This was on the same night that Hackett was harassing you
He blocked his number, threatened and then asked you for your address too
Then you asked if all of us would have each other's backs if who
Was on the phone was serious and came through rolling deep
There's six of us, we turned to bobble-heads and all agreed
Shortly after, two guys drove by calling us freaks
They parked the truck, one dude was drunk, we brawled in the street
Remember how you held your Bic lighter to help pack a fist
So it would hurt a little more, no time to be a pacifist
At that time, never had a moment felt as bad as this
Fought the driver one on one, popped him twice, swung back, he missed
So fast forward some years and a couple of months
Somehow you end up meeting that young man who was drunk
He story, he held his own, they all came at him at once
The truth, between the two, they never landed a punch

[Verse 3]
Dude, your garage, making Beginner's Lesson
You spit your bars, honest dog, I remember stressing
See I'm competitive, that's something that we never mentioned
It's either you or me, I'm trying to leave an impression
This is how we mold the track, wrote a verse, you wrote one back
Dylan hopped up on the mic, spit a verse, but nope it's wack
I used to love your flow in fact, I felt like you were holding back
Rewrote and extended your first verse, and I'm like “ohhh snap!”
It sucks that that's the only song that came to fruition
We tried a couple times, it ain't the same, somethings missing
Sometimes I wonder, what if we could pay our tuition
To go to LARS, those goals of ours became Rootedvizion
I found all of the sketches that we wrote while at Eric's
We really thought that these were funny? Woah I'm embarassed
I kept the pages though, these are the moments I cherish
I keep the memories till I grow old and I parish
